A new road for camp

BY BEN WARRELL, SPECIAL TO THE WESTERN KENTUCKY CATHOLIC

For years now, one of the only complaints we receive from camp families and retreat guests is about the road into and out of Gasper River Catholic Youth Camp and Retreat Center. The 0.75-mile gravel road is on hilly terrain with poor drainage and many downpours, and maintenance on the road has been difficult to maintain with our yard equipment.  Over the years, the quality and safety of the road has deteriorated greatly.

But recently, the diocese has approved a plan to fix the road into camp! The new plan, which will start on November 15 and be completed before Christmas/New Year’s Camp, will widen the existing road so two vehicles can safely pass coming or going in to camp. Also, large buses and delivery trucks will have no problems entering or exiting camp. The plan will improve drainage in three areas along the road to prevent washouts. In addition, the road and all gravel areas at camp will be chip sealed. This should last for at least 10 years before we need to look at maintenance on the road. Scott, Murphy and Daniel construction group will complete the plan for us and our guests.

The diocese has allotted money to get this project going, however, it may cost more than what has been already been given to complete the project. We ask that you prayerfully consider giving to help cover the total cost of the project. Just go to our website, www.gasperriverretreatcenter.org and click on the “Support Us” in the upper righthand corner to give towards this exciting new project for camp.

This road will ensure a new, safe and smooth entrance for all to enjoy the beautiful and holy land that is Gasper River Catholic Youth Camp and Retreat Center. As always, we do ask that you pray for the ministry here at camp and be assured of our prayers for you all as well. Thank you for all your years of love, prayers and support of Gasper River and may God bless your generosity!

Ben Warrell is the camp director of Gasper River Catholic Youth Camp and Retreat Center.
