In July, young adults from across the Diocese of Owensboro gathered at St. Joseph Monastery in Whitesville, Kentucky, for a one-day Eucharistic Revival Retreat hosted by the Office of Young Adult Ministry. The event offered a unique opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in a day of spiritual enrichment and the profound teachings of the Catholic faith.

Early morning Mass set the tone for the day, followed by praise and worship sessions and enriching talks by Fr. Basilio Az Cuc and Fr. Corey Bruns. The serene setting of St. Joseph Monastery, spanning 175 acres of natural beauty, served as an ideal backdrop for the retreat. Blooming flowers and inviting trails adorned the landscape, enhancing the sense of peace and spiritual contemplation.

The messages conveyed by Fr. Az Cuc and Fr. Bruns resonated deeply with attendees. Fr. Az Cuc addressed the concerning amount of disbelief in the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist, emphasizing the need for revival. He prompted participants to reflect on what they are looking for in life, in relationships, and in their spiritual journey and encouraged them to look for eternal life through the sacrament of the Eucharist. Fr. Bruns’s reminder to approach the sacraments with childlike innocence encouraged attendees to recall their initial encounters with the sacraments and rekindle a sense of wonder. He also urged participants to embrace sacrifice and gratitude in their daily lives.

A standout moment of the retreat was the interaction with the cloistered sisters residing at St. Joseph Monastery. For many, it was an eye-opening experience, offering a unique glimpse into the diverse vocations within the diocese. The presence of Sr. Bethany Marie, formally Hannah Bland before entering religious life, added a personal touch for the participants who had worked with her at Gasper River or attended school together.

Upon returning from the retreat, many participants including myself experienced the liturgy in a new light. Retreats organized by the Diocese of Owensboro leave one feeling inspired, connected to the community, and enriched by the encounters they’ve had. Young adults should take advantage of the diocesan retreats. These retreats foster a sense of belonging and shared growth. Whether one is questioning their beliefs, rediscovering their faith, or a devoted practicing Catholic, there’s a place for everyone. Being surrounded by Christ-filled individuals and sharing spiritual encounters can enhance any Christian’s faith journey.
