Pilgrims of Hope: Fostering Hope Through Advocacy

Editor’s note: In celebration of the Jubilee of Hope, The Western Kentucky Catholic has launched Pilgrims of Hope, a yearlong blog series inspired by Pope Francis’ Bull of Indiction of the Ordinary Jubilee of the Year 2025: “My thoughts turn to all those pilgrims of hope who will travel to Rome in order to experience the Holy Year and to all those others who, though unable to visit the City of the Apostles Peter and Paul, will celebrate it in their local Churches.” Blog reflections will be written by individuals from across the Diocese of Owensboro, sharing their unique perspectives on the virtue of hope in a world that so greatly needs it.

BY HELEN BENNETT

Serving as an advocate for the Tribunal of the Diocese of Owensboro has proven to be a unique calling – one rooted in compassion, understanding, and above all, hope. I have personally witnessed as an advocate the many and complex challenges that individuals face but also the profound transformation that is possible through the annulment process. The Church’s annulment process offers not condemnation, but a path toward healing and fullness.

Many who seek an annulment carry wounds from broken relationships and fears about belonging to the Church community. Through prayer, listening, and encouragement, I am blessed to journey with individuals to offer guidance, clarify procedures, and provide a steady presence. Above the procedural steps, beyond paperwork and canon law, my most important role as an advocate is to remind others that they are not alone and that hope can be found amid their disappointment and pain. I am constantly reminded that hope is in the midst of brokenness.

Fostering hope is a beautiful way to minister to others. I see people rediscover their clarity and confidence while sharing their stories. What a gift our Church has given us, the annulment process. A process that is based on trust in God’s love and mercy.

For every individual I accompany through the annulment process, I dedicate myself to walking alongside them at every stage of the process. This commitment is not only a matter of time but also a wholehearted offering of my talents and training. Through each interaction, I strive to provide support, guidance, and understanding, ensuring that no one feels overwhelmed as they navigate the complexities of the process.

The Tribunal provides tremendous support to us throughout the entire process. Whether we need to have procedural steps explained in simpler terms or affirmation that we are moving in the right direction, the steadfast presence of the Tribunal offers much-needed support and guidance. This unwavering commitment ensures that no one feels lost or uncertain. The Tribunal upholds its mission of accompanying each person with empathy and understanding, reinforcing a sense of belonging and care within the Church community.

Undoubtedly, this ministry stands as the most significant and fulfilling role I have undertaken. The opportunity to serve others in this capacity has brought profound meaning and reward to my life, reinforcing my belief in the power of compassionate advocacy within the Church.

One of the most meaningful aspects of my work as an advocate is the opportunity to share this ministry with my husband, Dcn. Ken Bennett. Together, we have joined forces as advocates, extending our support to couples who are both seeking annulments. Serving together in this capacity brings us great joy, as we minister as a team and provide a united presence.

As an advocate, I am honored to witness these stories of renewal and hope.

Helen Bennett belongs to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and has served as an annulment advocate for over 15 years.
